Maps and Charts

The Middle East

This small but important collection dates from the begining of the 19th Century, a time when the British empire was at its height and was still expanding. Britain was in fierce competition with other european colonial powers such as France, Portugal and Holland for domination of the trade routes to and from India and the Far East.

Many of the of charts, maps and plans presented here were the result of an extensive survey of the Gulf region conducted in the interests of the all powerful East India Trading Company both before and after the 1820 treaty between the British and the (then) Trucial States.
