Further Information

The chart is not signed but it is quite possibly the work of George Callendar, Master of His Majesty's ship Romney, later used by J.F.W. Des Barres in the production of his own, 1775 chart of Boston Harbour (see Heritage Charts A102).

No soundings are offered in areas such as the Charles River or above Charles Town and Noodle Island. Although there is little notation on the chart, there are some delightful, almost child-like touches, including a representation of the beacon on Beacon Hill in Boston and churches at Dorchester, Cambridge and Milton.

The chart includes a depiction of Fort William on what is now known as Castle Island. It also depicts the Lighthouse on Brewster Island which was built in 1716 and was, reputedly, the first lighthouse in the New World - it was later destroyed by the Rebels in 1775 and again by the British in 1776. It is worth viewing Heritage Charts A109v which offers various views of Boston Bay and Harbour including Castle William and the Light House.
