Description

Further Information

The map shows the two islands which were, at the time of making, under British control. Included are the position of both the British and French fleets February 7th 1782.

The British, under the command of Admiral Samuel Hood is depicted defending the harbour and neighbouring towns of St. Georges, Irish and Rasse Terre while the French Fleet, commanded by Admiral Francois-Joseph Paul, Comte De Grasse, stands-off blockading the port. The engagement resulted in a French victory and the the Islands once again exchanged hands. Previously the Islands had also been under Spanish control as well. The reason for such exchanges between the European nations was, as for all other Caribbean islands; sugar. The sugar trade was at its zenith during the 18th century and control of the plantations on these islands was worth a fortune.

Beyond the military disposition, including Forts, the map offers excellent topography of the islands showing land relief, roads, towns, parishes, churches, rivers and ponds. Hydrorography is also included with sand banks, shoals and rock shown, but no soundings.

After the American War of Independence ended in 1782 the succeeding Treaties of Paris and Versailles in 1783 saw all previous holdings in the Caribbean returned to Britain.
